DJUN

ART department

Djun’s paintings explore the force and process of life itself—merging abstraction and figuration to give form to what is often invisible. His work samples themes and motifs from both historical and contemporary art movements, creating layered compositions where materials and signs carry symbolic, personal, and social meaning.

Across his evolving bodies of work, Djun blends traditional mediums—oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal—with contemporary ones such as wall paint, latex, resin, and spray paint. Collage and assemblage form the backbone of his conceptual and material practice, acting as metaphors for fragmentation, memory, and transformation.

Born on the island of Mauritius, Djun grew up across continents, living in Nairobi, Boston, Rome, and Helsinki. Though shaped by global perspectives, his artistic language remains rooted in the volcanic landscapes and cultural hybridity of his homeland, Mauritius, —where African, Indian, European, and Asian influences collide. His inspirations span American and European Modernism, Italian religious art, and German Expressionism.

Beyond painting, Djun also works with photography, video, and design. His works have been exhibited internationally, including at the National Pavilion of Mauritius at the 56th Venice Biennale.

He also runs Djunivers.
